International exchange program

With 130 exchange partner universities in 30 different countries, there are many opportunities to spend one or two semesters overseas as part of your Monash degree.

Where can I go on exchange?

Refer to the Partner universities webpage for more information about where you can go on exchange.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the exchange program you must have:

  • Completed at least 48 credit points of your course at Monash (except Engineering and Law) at the time of application.
    • Engineering students (single or double degree) must complete 72 credit points (less for intercampus exchanges between Monash Australia and Malaysia) at the time of application
    • Law students (single or double degree) who intend studying law units overseas must complete 72 credit points in total which must include 48 credit points of compulsory or quasi compulsory units from the Bachelor of Laws.  These 48 credit points of Law units can have been completed at Monash or have been given specified credit from another institution.
    • Law double degree students who do not intend studying law units overseas must have completed at least 48 credit points of their current course; except for Engineering-Law students, who are required to complete 72 credit points of their double degree course, at the time of application.
  • An active enrolment in a Monash undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree program at any campus in Australia , Malaysia or South Africa
  • A credit average (60%) in the results so far in your current course {Art & Design students need to have a distinction average (70%) throughout the course of their studies at Monash University}.
  • Complied with any additional requirements of your faculty and had your overseas study plan approved by your faculty
  • Applied for a country other then your country of citizenship
  • Selected a full time load of on-campus units at the overseas university
  • Been assessed by a process of consultation with Monash Abroad and faculty staff as a suitable representative of Monash University

If you are undertaking a typical three year degree, you can go on exchange in the 2nd semester of your second year or the 1st semester of your third year. Exceptions to the requirement of completing 48 credit points upon application will be made if you are a

  • Bachelor of Arts (Global) student, where it is compulsory to study abroad
  • Bachelor of Arts (International) student, where it is compulsory to study abroad
  • Post graduate student (depending on where your undergraduate degree was completed)
  • University of California or Japanese University applicant, where the deadlines to apply for the programs are June 1 and December 1
  • Intercampus exchange applicant who is submitting his/her application in semester 2 to study abroad in semester 1 next year

Other factors which are taken into account include:

  • The number of exchange places available at the host university.  In the unlikely event that no places are available you will be given the opportunity to apply for another university.
  • Students enrolled in Bachelor of Medicine, Nursing or Pharmacy degrees cannot currently go overseas on exchange, although they can do clinical placements overseas. Some opportunities for nursing, emergency health and pharmaceutical science students to do exchanges will become available in 2009 - watch this website for details.
  • Some faculties may not permit you to undertake overseas study during the final semester of your course - check with your faculty exchange adviser before applying.
  • Monash students at the campuses in Malaysia and South Africa can participate in exchanges to third countries (eg to Sweden or the USA) provided they meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Monash part-time and distance education students can participate in the exchange progam but must study full time on-campus while overseas.
  • Students not well versed (Level 7 or higher) in the language of instruction at the host university, will not be allowed to study at that University.
  • Students who are undertaking a Monash Diploma in conjunction with their Monash degree are considered degree seeking students and are eligible to apply for exchange, regardless of whether the credit is going to transfer to their degree or diploma. But it is a prerogative of the faculty to approve or not approve such an application.

The Monash Abroad office selects students to go on the exchange program.
