Are international students safe in Australia?

In general, Australia is a diverse and tolerant nation and Melbourne is known as one of the most liveable -- and safest -- cities in the world. However, Australia is an urbanised society and not immune from crime.

Australia welcomes international students and migrants, who have all played their part in the construction of a friendly, tolerant and progressive country.

What is Monash University doing for safety for international students?

We seek to create a safe environment at all of our campuses and provide information for students about personal safety.

  • At the start of each semester, members of the Victoria Police Multicultural Liaison Unit are invited to speak to international students on safety.
  • The University provides information to international students about safety and security in the International Student Newsletter which is emphasised during other events on campus.

We value the supportive multicultural environment at Monash and will do everything we can to further enhance this.

  • If an emergency does develop, there is a 24-hour emergency number for on-campus matters - (03) 9905 3333, or extension 333 from any internal phone.
  • If students encounter a threatening situation off-campus, Victoria Police can be contacted by telephone on 000.

For help in non-urgent situations, Monash has established a Community Care Line as part of its commitment to providing a safe study environment. Students can call the Community Care Line to seek assistance in managing situations where their wellbeing is affected by inappropriate, threatening or concerning behaviours or events.

How is Monash working with the government for international student safety?

The Victorian government condemns assaults on international students and the Victorian Police force patrols around several railway stations.

Together with the Victorian government and other universities, Monash is working on a plan for student safety which includes:

  • strong law enforcement
  • enhanced campus-based student support programs
  • more efforts in home countries to equip potential students with realistic information about the cost of living in Australia , safety and security, and visa requirements.

What can students do for their personal safety?

The Victoria Police advises people to use be practical and use common sense when travelling after hours.

  • Don't carry large amounts of cash.
  • Avoid isolated areas particularly at night.
  • Keep valuables out of sight.
  • Don't walk alone in isolated areas.
  • Report suspicious people or activities to the police.
