International Year 12 and International Baccalaureate FAQ

1. What is VTAC?

The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) acts on behalf of participating universities and institutions to process applications, coordinate results and facilitate selection for international students studying an Australian Year 12 in Australia or VCE overseas.

2. How do I apply?

International students studying an Australian Year 12 in Australia or VCE overseas apply through VTAC online. For 2009 entry, timely applications open 4 August and close 30 September 2008. Students are required to pay an application fee direct to VTAC.

International students studying an Australian Year 12 in Australia or VCE overseas are encouraged to read the VTAC guide, as some courses require supplementary information to be submitted by certain given dates. International students choose course codes that end in 3 (fee-paying international). VTAC course codes are different from Monash University course codes.

For international students studying an Australian Year12 overseas, you will have to apply directly to International Admissions.

3. Who applies through VTAC?

  • International Victorian Year 12 or IB students
  • International Interstate students studying an Australian Year 12
  • International students studying VCE outside Australia
  • Local Year 12 or IB students
  • Non Year 12 (mature aged applicants)
  • Interstate local Year 12
  • NZ Citizens
  • Local students with overseas qualifications

5. Can I apply to Monash University directly?

Students studying an Australian Year 12 in Australia or VCE overseas can apply directly to International Admissions after VTAC First Round Offers for a March start date. Applicants wishing to apply for a July start date, may do so anytime after First Round Offers.

6. When are offers released?

International offers are released on the 13 January 2009. It will take approximately 7 days for you to receive the original offer from Monash, which will be sent by email and hardcopy.

7. When and how do I accept?

International offers can be accepted directly with the institution. Normal acceptance procedures apply. Offers are not accepted through VTAC.

8. Can I apply directly to Monash University if I don't get a Monash offer?

International students studying an Australian Year 12 in Australia or VCE overseas can apply directly to Monash after offers are announced.

Direct applicants are still required to meet the VTAC entry requirements and must submit application forms with documents.

You can apply directly if you are in the following situation:

  • The offer you have, including a Monash or any other Victorian institution offer, is a higher preference than the Monash offer you would now like to receive
  • Your preferred course of choice was not one you listed on your final change of preference submission
  • You would now like to consider Monash College but did not state Monash College as a preference

Agents can assist you when applying directly to the University or via VTAC.

10. I don't have my offer

If you have not received your offer, please email scenquiries@adm.monash.edu.au.

In your email, clearly write your first name, last name, date of birth, VTAC number or Monash ID.

Our admissions team will investigate and respond to you with an outcome.

11. I didn't get an offer at all

You may not have met the entry requirements for your preferred course. There are alternative options that could enable you to study at Monash University.

You could consider another Monash University course or a pathway program such as a Monash College diploma program.

12. What is the GAT?

The GAT is a General Assessment Task administered by VCAA. It governs or monitors the schools assessment. The GAT is an essential part of the VCE assessment procedures.

All students enrolled in one or more VCE Unit 3 and 4 sequences must sit the GAT. Students whose only enrolment at Unit 3 and 4 level is in a VCE VET study are not required to sit the GAT. Although GAT results do not count directly towards a student's VCE results, they play an important role in checking that school assessments and examinations have been accurately assessed, and in determining Derived Examination Scores. So it is important to sit the GAT and do as well as possible on all parts of it.

13. Do I need to do an ISAT or UMAT for Medicine (MBBS)?

International students are required to sit an ISAT test for MBBS. Please contact the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) directly for testing dates.

Monash does not accept the UMAT for international students.

14. Do I need to submit a pre-selection kit and can I apply to Art and Design during Change of Preference?

Yes - pre-selection kits are available from the faculty during Open Day or alternatively they are required to contact the faculty by email preselection_design@artdes.monash.edu.au.

Interviews are held in mid-November/early December and students can participate in Change of Preference as long as they meet the entry requirements first.

15. What are irregular offers?

Irregular offers are for local students only.

16. Are ENTER ranks guaranteed?

ENTER ranks at Monash are not guaranteed. A previous year's ENTER scores are only indicative.

17. I'm doing Year 12 interstate. When can I apply?

International students studying an Australian Year 12 interstate apply through VTAC online. For 2009 entry, timely applications open 4 August and close 30 September 2008. Students are required to pay an application fee direct to VTAC.

18. What is change of preference?

Change of preference occurs after results are released in December. During the change of preference period, you can re-enter the VTAC system and make application amendments.

Change of preference is an opportunity to reassess your course preference list, include new courses or consider alternative pathways (such as Monash College).

All students get 12 preferences.

19. What is SEAS? Can I access it?

Special Entry Access Schemes (SEAS) is a scheme for local students studying Year 12 or IB in Victoria. International students are only eligible to apply for the Year 11/12 Special Consideration component of SEAS.

20. What does STAT mean?

Special Tertiary Admissions Tests (STAT) is administered by VTAC. The STAT test a wide range of competencies. Students only need to sit it if it is stated as a course requirement within the VTAC Guide.

22. What do I do if I'm overseas at the time my offers are announced?

For applicants who have been advised to submit an application direct, International Recruitment Services will email and send by mail an official copy of the offer letter once all appropriate documentation has been located.

Please ensure your contact information is correct. It is advisable to contact International Recruitment Services prior to leaving the country to confirm we have the correct details.

If you are studying an Australian Year 12 in Australia or VCE overseas, VTAC will announce your offer on Tuesday 13 January (for 2009). This can be found by logging in to VTAC MyInfo. Make sure you take your password and PIN home with you.

Monash will send you an official University offer after the VTAC offers date.

23. Can I accept online?

All acceptance documents can be found online with detailed instructions as to how to download and submit the forms.

24. Can my offer letter be downloaded from the University website?

All offer letters are sent via email and hard copy via mail.
