Death in the family
The Monash community was hit hard by the tragic events of 21 October. Many people hesitated to enter the Menzies Building when it reopened again, feeling that a safe, familiar place had been violated. Mounds of flowers for the victims were left outside the building overlooking the Forum. Monash alumni wrote letters and emails saluting the heroes who had stopped the gunman and offering prayers for the victims. A graffiti artist sprayed the words, ‘Life is short. Cherish your friends. Love one another. R.I.P.’ across a university notice board. The Monash community, many felt, would never be quite the same place again.
A Ceremony of Reflection was held on 25 October in Robert Blackwood Hall. Vice-Chancellor Peter Darvall addressed the audience of students and staff. Relatives of the victims attended, some having travelled from Singapore and Hong Kong.
