Robert Blackwood Hall opens

Interior, Robert Blackwood HallThe building's distinctive orange bricks challenge the more sombre hegemony of the Clayton campus’ buildings: the dark brown manganese bricks, grey besser blocks and white cement rendering used for all the main campus buildings until this point.

Designed by Sir Roy Grounds, architect of the Melbourne Arts Centre, the hall becomes one of the country’s finest concert venues with peerless acoustics. As well as hundreds of graduation ceremonies, the hall has hosted the acclaimed ABC Monash Series of classical concerts, and in March 1985, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra became the first Australian orchestra to be played live on international airwaves, direct from Monash.
