How to use MUTTS

Overview

The Monash University Timetable System (MUTTS) allows you to view the scheduled times for all units offered by Monash, and:

  • includes all unit activities - lectures, tutorials, labs, classes, etc.
  • is published before enrolment for first-year students
  • is published to coincide with re-enrolment
  • allows you to create a draft timetable.

How to use MUTTS to create a draft timetable

Tthe main steps in using MUTTS are:

  1. login to MUTTS
  2. select the year
  3. filter units by teaching period and campus
  4. enter or select unit codes
  5. generate a timetable
  6. remove any activities that clash and save your draft timetable.

Tips

Before you start:

When first using MUTTS:

  • avoid working with more than four units at once
  • be patient with search and unit loading times
  • see the instructions below if you are having trouble.

Consider how to use the filters to reduce the number of search returns If you leave the tick boxes blank, the search returns units for all:
  • teaching periods
  • campuses.

Select the teaching period The Full Year:
  • does not mean semesters one and two
  • runs for the whole year
  • is a teaching period relevant to honours and research students
You can also filter to a semester later in this process

Select the campus If the unit you want to study is more important than the location:
  • Select a number of campus filters, eg Clayton and Caulfield, or
  • Leave it blank to bring back all options
 
Enter the unit code Entering a full unit code will return a single unit

A partial code will return all units starting with the same sequence (eg. ABC)

Leaving the units box empty will return a very long list of all units
 
Click Search A single unit or a list of units matching your search criteria will appear in the box on the left.

If no units are returned, try changing some of the filters

Click the top arrow to move the highlighted unit to the box on the right

Repeat for each activity

To remove a unit, highlight the unit on the right and use the bottom arrow to move it back to the box on the left Move unit to view box

If required, select the Activity Type Select activities that you must attend, eg. tutorials versus lectures, where you can attend at optional times Set required options

Leave Select Output Format as HTML HTML displays timetable in your browser Excel downloads into an excel worksheet.

You can do this later from the main timetable display screen
 
Click either:
  • View Grid Timetable
  • View Flat Timetable

If required, use the timeline filter at the top of the screen.

Click in a yellow box (indicating a week) to view activities and remove any unwanted activities.
If you have selected activities for semesters one and two, you can use the timeline to filter out activities running in the other semester.

When a week is selected it becomes shaded.

Mouse over a week to see the date.

To unselect, click the box again

Select a session time for each activity by ticking next to the activity code The flat/list view shows less detail than the calendar/grid view.

In the calendar/grid view, mouse over the pin to see more detail, such as the class size

Click the Rebuild with selection button at the bottom left of the screen.

This removes unselected activities
Your draft timetable now displays only your preferred session times for activities.

You can swap to grid or flat view anytime using the link at the top right of the screen

If required, click Export to Excel to save your draft timetable Alternatively, after enrolling you can view and print your timetable in Allocate+

In the grid display, activities are colour-coded by activity type.
