From Peninsula to San Francisco

Monash Business School's Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) – delivered from the Monash Peninsula campus – focuses on teaching great management and business skills that will take graduates into any business sector.

But at Monash, the opportunities can also be truly global – as BBA student Mary Matinyenya found out when she travelled to the University of California Berkeley in the United States, to take part in a special study tour examining entrepreneurship.

Offered for the first time in 2018, the Monash Business School Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Technology Study Tour offers undergraduate students a chance to rub shoulders with successful entrepreneurs and learn from distinguished business professors at Berkeley Haas School of Business.

For two weeks in July this year, Mary took in the sights of San Francisco, mixed with industry leaders and attended lectures with experts from the University of California. The study trip culminated in a tour of Silicon Valley in San Francisco's Bay Area, the home to some of the world's best-known tech companies and the must-have address for any aspiring tech entrepreneur.

"I was impressed with the structure of the course, and how we networked and interacted with industry professionals and entrepreneurs. The class sessions at the University of California Berkeley were amazing, and Monash staff went above and beyond for us," she says.

"My highlights included visits to Google, Amazon, Salesforce, Plug and Play Tech Centre and Berkeley Sky Deck."

Of course, entrepreneurial skills are not just for those with a tech idea. Employers increasingly seek employees with creativity and the ability to think innovatively about problems.

As a final year student, Mary wanted to an opportunity to learn some new skills and challenge her capabilities.

"The whole experience taught me to always have an entrepreneurial mindset regardless of the career path I take, and to always take on new experiences," she says.

"I strongly encourage fellow students to undertake at least one international experience during their studies."
