Centre for Learning Analytics at Monash (CoLAM) View

Unprecedented amounts of data are collected by technology in education. Learning analytics reveals hidden insights from this information to optimise learning and its environments. Established in 2020, the Centre for Learning Analytics at Monash (CoLAM) is a world-leader in learning analytics – and a globally-renowned hub for educating students and professionals in this area. Gathering top expertise from around the world, the Centre is undertaking applied research that will directly inform public policy and its implications for education practice.

Hub for Educational Design and Innovation (HEDI) View

The Hub for Educational Design and Innovation (HEDI) is the home of passionate researchers and educators who are reimagining higher education and professional learning. Our mission is to improve the access, opportunities, experience and success of all learners. We do this through the innovative transformation of learning designs, technologies, environments and communities.

Education research at Monash View

Monash Education is ranked number 1 in Australia and has a reputation for research excellence, expertise in areas of education including arts and creativity, early childhood play, environment and sustainability, health and physical education, and digital education. The Faculty's research agenda is focussed on working towards a society in which education enables full and equitable participation, with pillars on reimagining educational leadership, transforming teaching and learning, shaping digital futures, enhancing health and wellbeing, and educating for diversity and inclusion.

In 2021, 98 units directly related to SDG4 were offered across Monash University, with a total enrolment of 4,094 students. In total 642 units were offered by the Faculty of Education.

Centre for Monash Professional Development and Monash Online Education View

The Monash Centre for Professional Development and Monash Online Education supports the faculties and other areas in the University in the development and execution of formal life-long learning opportunities, including professional development, short courses, executive education and micro-credential courses.

Master of Inclusive Education View

The Master of Inclusive Education is designed for qualified teachers who wish to develop specialist knowledge and skills in inclusive practices in classrooms and schools. It enables students to critically explore theory, current research, practical methods and regulatory contexts which inform effective strategies in supporting children, adolescents and adults with learning, social and behavioural challenges. Underpinned by fundamental philosophies around access, students will develop an understanding of contemporary educational issues around social justice and equity.

Master of Environment and Sustainability View

Monash University staff educators from science, social science and business disciplines have co-designed an integrated sustainability course to prepare students to address the complex issues underlying the SDGs, drawing upon the Research Skills Development framework. Their collaborative approach is described in a chapter of the Handbook on Teaching and Learning for Sustainable Development.

SDG 4.7: Promoting education for Sustainable Development View

As one of the first signatories to the University Commitment to the SDGs, Monash has committed to provide educational opportunities for our students to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development. In its updated Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Statement Monash has reiterated this commitment to the promotion of ESG and SDG awareness and engagement across all degrees. Monash is also a signatory to the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME), the Commitment to Green Chemistry, and the Global Engineering Dean’s Council Sustainability Commitment all of which commit to education for sustainable development.

In 2021, Monash offers several major curricular programs, including the award-winning interdisciplinary Master of Environment and Sustainability, the ground-breaking Bachelor of Science Advanced — Global Challenges (Honours), the Master of International Development Practice, the Master of International Sustainable Tourism Management, the Master of Green and Sustainable Technologies and the Graduate Certificate of Innovation for Sustainability . In addition we offered over 75 study units directly relating to sustainability and sustainable development across a wide range of study areas.

Despite pandemic restrictions, we also offered a wide range co-curricular and leadership programs relating to sustainability and sustainable development, leadership and entrepreneurship, including The Generator, Leave No One Behind, Green Steps, the Social entrepreneurship challenge in the Indo-Pacific, and Ancora Imparo Leadership Program.

Student-led initiatives include the Monash Association of Sustainability, the Monash Energy Club, the Monash International Affairs Society, Precious Plastics Monash, the Monash University Volunteer Program, and SDSN Youth AusNZPac.

We have also been working to advance education for the SDGs beyond Monash, through Monash-led initiatives such as the Education, Environment and Sustainability research group, the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub, and our partnerships in initiatives such as the Youth Environmental Alliance in Higher Education (YEAH SDGs), Monitoring and Evaluation of Climate Change Education, and the SDSN’s Accelerating Education for SDGs in Universities initiatives.

Thrive by Five ‘Town Halls’ View

From Dec 2020 to May 2021, Monash, in partnership with the Minderoo Foundation, hosted a series of Thrive by Five related Town Hall events. Monash has world leading capabilities in early childhood education, children’s cognitive and brain development and policy reform and better governance. These town hall discussions highlighted the cutting edge Monash research that provides the evidence base to support policy change and innovation across multiple jurisdictions that effect systems change in the Australian early childhood education sector.

Centre for Youth Policy and Education Practice View

The Centre of Youth Policy and Education Practice (CYPEP) mission is to connect youth research to policy and practice. Young people are often denied a role in national debates about Australia's future. CYPEP seeks to change the conversation about young people by actively engaging them and the organisations seeking to support them. CYPEP works with policy-makers, educators and youth-focused organisations on research that addresses emerging needs, and that respects and includes young people.

The work of CYPEP, particularly its Australian Youth Barometer, featured in virtually every media outlet in the country in 2021, reaching millions of readers. This work has been positively received nationally and internationally. Locally, CYEPE has also begun providing advice to government and the not-for-profit sector seeking to improve the life outcomes of young people.

Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership View

The Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership is dedicated to building better leaders. It offers a variety of leadership programs, covering different topics, sectors and levels of immersion. By sharpening critical reasoning and ethical thinking, it has been helping high-level decision-makers since 1993 to better see the bigger picture on any issue they face. The Centre is Monash University, The Myer Foundation and Vincent Fairfax Ethics in Leadership Foundation working in partnership. Programs offered by Cranlana include The Colloquium, Vincent Fairfax Fellowship, Executive Ethics, and the Customised Ethics Programs.

Monash University Volunteer Program (MUVP) View

Founded by Monash Malaysia Students, The Monash University Volunteer Program (MUVP) is mission to provide an opportunity for students to volunteer and inspire students to make a difference in the society through Community Development programs and Non Governmental Organisation Collaboration (NGOC) programs. In 2021, despite COVID restrictions, Volunteers conducted online teaching sessions for children and teens, in collaboration with UNHCR Manna House Learning Centre, Trinity Community Children Home, and HOPE Worldwide, Shelter Refugee Home.

Low-tech solutions to remote learning during COVID-19 View

In a collaborative project with local NGO, Global Development and Research Initiative (GDRI), Monash Business School developed a set of audio lessons using an Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI) methodology – a method that allows learners to stop and react to questions and exercises through verbal response and to engage in physical and intellectual activities with a ‘special helper’, such as an adult household member, while the program is ‘on the air’. They delivered these lessons to children in grades two to four over 15 weeks via basic mobile phones using the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system. This programme is widely accessible as basic mobile phone penetration rate in rural Bangladesh is significantly higher, close to 95%, than other one-way technologies such as radio and television.

TeachSpace View

Created by Monash Education, TeachSpace is a place for teachers to continue to learn. It provides resources, case studies and handy tips for the classroom. From easily accessible articles and videos to deeper dives for educational leaders, all the materials are based on the latest research from specialist educators from Monash. In 2021, this included over 15 articles covering topics such as Teaching & learning; Science, maths & STEM; Health & Physical Education; Early childhood; Inclusive education; Development & behaviour; Wellbeing; and Educational leadership.

Graduate Outcomes 2021 View

Despite limitations imposed by the COVID crisis, Monash University graduates have performed well in the graduate labour market in 2021. 70.3 per cent of bachelor graduates found full-time employment within six months of completing their studies, and 80.5 per cent of students who completed postgraduate degrees were working full-time within six months of course completion.
