The McKinnon Institute is Australia’s only organisation dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness of our political leadership. It aims to build the capability and diversity of our state and federal members of Parliament through professional development programs that equip and enable political leaders to lead effectively. Non-partisan and not-for-profit, it was established in June 2019 through a partnership with Monash University and the Susan McKinnon Foundation.
In 2022, the McKinnon Institute ran the inaugural program for new members of the federal parliament. These sessions were designed with the cooperation of the major parties and the crossbench, confirming that the McKinnon Institute has the trust and respect of all groups in the parliament.
The Monash Law Clinics seek to empower disadvantaged members of our communities through access to legal services and advocacy support, as well as to inspire life-long learning in students. These clinics are enabled by the support provided by the University, government, philanthropists and the legal profession.
The depth and breadth of the Monash Law Clinics is highlighted by the variety of legal issues covered by the clinics, including (for example) the Afghan Support Clinic, ELEOS Anti-Death Penalty Clinic, Climate Justice Clinic, Grata Fund Democracy and Freedoms Clinic, Cohealth Monash Legal Assistance Clinic, Human Rights Clinic, Australian Law Reform Clinic, LawTech Clinic, Lawyer Assisted Family Dispute Resolution Clinic, National Justice Project Clinic, Modern Slavery Clinic, TradeLab Clinic, the Innovation / Start Up Clinic, Social Security Rights Victoria Clinic, ATO Tax Clinic and the Access to Justice Clinic
In 2022, the new ATO Tax Clinic was added. A protocol with the Victorian County Court has been established for the referral to the clinic of self-represented litigants in matters initiated by the Australian Taxation Office when seeking to recover debts.
