Professor Susan Elliott AM - Provost and Senior Vice-President

As Provost and Senior Vice-President, Professor Susan Elliott provides leadership of the ten Monash Faculties, as well as the University’s international campuses, Monash University Malaysia, Monash University Indonesia, and centres in India, Italy and the People’s Republic of China. Professor Elliott oversees the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the University’s academic vision and institutional excellence within the globally competitive and dynamic landscape of higher education.

Professor Elliott has a distinguished reputation as a deeply experienced senior leader with a broad record of engagement in universities, nationally and internationally, and a celebrated international profile of collaboration. Education and engagement have been a core focus throughout Professor Elliott’s career, and she demonstrates an ability to successfully lead major programs of innovation and change in large-scale, complex and demanding environments.

Professional background

Professor Susan Elliott joined Monash University in March 2017 as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Senior Vice-President (Education) where she led the University’s dedicated Education portfolio and shaped the University’s education agenda.  Professor Elliott has played a key role in educational profile and load discussions in domestic and international areas has also led major University transformation of education curriculum and university policies and processes.

Professor Elliott successfully led the development of key educational partnerships, including with Online Education Services for online education, and with the Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership and the McKinnon Institute for Political Leadership, as part of the University’s professional development education. In addition, she has been instrumental in the development of key digital education ventures which have supported the University’s transformation and engagement with online education, which was critical during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to joining Monash University, Professor Elliott held the position of Deputy Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University of Melbourne.  In addition to Professor Elliott’s responsibilities for international engagement and development, she was also credited with the renewed direction of equity programs, increasing the number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds and reshaping The University of Melbourne’s scholarship program.

Professor Elliott has successfully led a broad range of portfolios and entities and holds numerous directorships and positions on national and international committees, including Past President of the Asia Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) – the first Australian and first female academic to be elected to the position. Professor Elliott has led the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, overseeing all admissions to Victorian tertiary institutions She has also served as a Board member for the Australia India Institute.

Professor Elliott is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

Academic interests

Medical education has been a key focus among Professor Elliott’s research interests, and she has published extensively on the scholarship of education.  Her academic qualifications include Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, Doctor of Medicine (by thesis), and Graduate Certificates of Higher Education and Health Economics.
