Chief Information Security Officer, BlueScope
Catherine Catherine Buhler is BlueScope’s Chief Information Security Officer and is responsible for ensuring the protection of BlueScope’s sensitive information and assets against cyber threats and extrusion. BlueScope is Australia’s largest flat steel production company with over 100 manufacturing plants in 17 countries. ColorBond is the product most readily associated with BlueScope.
Catherine began her professional working life as a secondary school mathematics and science teacher primarily teaching across Years 8-12. After six months of travelling throughout Europe she returned to Australia and took up her first ICT role in network operations with the National Australia Bank. From there Catherine has held a variety of roles across Services Management and Marketing, Business Analysis, and Project and Program Management. Whilst fulfilling these roles Catherine completed a Graduate Diploma in Computing at Monash University and a Masters of Business Information Technology at RMIT University for which she was awarded the Tattersall’s prize for most outstanding academic achievement.
Catherine’s assignments at both SMS and Ajilon increasingly related to information security delivering expertise in access controls, configuration management and network security, credit card security, symmetric cryptography, and key management. This lead to specialised security assignments at GE Capital, IAG/CGU, Australia Post and ANZ Bank.
In 2014 Catherine took up a senior role in Telstra’s Security Operations responsible for setting the strategic direction and leadership of the 40 strong team delivering Vulnerability Services, Secure Coding, PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) and ISO/IEC 27001 Compliance and the development and maintenance of Telstra’s Information Security Standards.
Catherine is a passionate Cyber Security and Risk Professional and an accomplished executive skilled in providing security and risk strategy and management in a digitally connected world.
