Mr Michael Devine
Mr Michael Devine is Substantive Principal at Western Port Secondary College in Hastings, Victoria, and acting Senior Education Improvement Leader for Southern Peninsula Area for the South Eastern Victorian Region of the Department of Education.
Mr Devine’s career as a teacher and leading teacher began at Patterson River Secondary College, where he gained a focus on developing curriculum programs that targeted engagement and experiential learning experiences for middle years students, while meeting core outcomes and accountabilities.
In 2006, he won a scholarship through the Department to undertake a Masters of Education in School Leadership at Monash, where he collaborated with peers from across the state system, researched best practices in engagement and curriculum development and tracked the implementation and development of a curriculum program.
In 2010 Mr Devine was appointed Assistant Principal and later Principal of Western Port Secondary College. His core focus has been addressing the scourge of disadvantage and the impact on education in low socio-economic and disadvantaged communities.
During his time at the college he has partnered with government, community and philanthropic organisations to establish programs and pathways that tackle disadvantage broadly. He has led a campaign for whole school improvement and cultural change to achieve positive outcomes in both academic and social and emotional outcomes. In 2016 the school was identified and invited by Social Ventures Australia to join the Bright Spots Schools Program, which recognises and supports leadership teams achieving consistently high outcomes in marginalised and disadvantaged schools.
In 2017, Mr Devine was named a recipient of the Commonwealth Bank Teaching Award Fellowship. Thanks to this award and other partnerships, he has travelled extensively, researching and studying best practice in education systems in Singapore, British Columbia in Canada, New York City, United Arab Emirates and United States of America.
Mr Devine holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Diploma of Education and a Masters in Education from Monash, and recently completed a certificate in Educational Leadership at Harvard University.
