Distinguished Alumni Awards

The 2016 Monash Fellows and Honorary Fellows were appointed at a graduation ceremony last week during Graduation Week. University Fellowships are awarded for outstanding service or attainment for the benefit of the community in the arts, sciences, the professions, or in civil society.

Monash University alumni are appointed as Fellows with non-Monash alumni receiving Honorary Fellowships.

Michelle Grattan AO is one of Australia's most respected and awarded political journalists. She has been a member of the Canberra parliamentary press gallery for more than 40 years covering the most significant stories in Australian politics. A recipient of the Melbourne Press Club’s Quill Award for  Lifetime Achievement, Ms Grattan also won a Walkley Award for Journalistic Leadership and, in 1988, was named Australian Journalist of the Year. She also holds the honour of being the first female editor of an Australian metropolitan daily newspaper.

Peter Scanlon is the Chair and Founder of a private family company, The Taverners Group and Chair of the Scanlon Foundation. He is Chair of the Migration Council Australia, a Director of the Grattan Institute and President of Community Hubs Australia. He was also previously a Commissioner of the Australian Football  League for a decade and also Chair of the TAB. For many years, Mr Scanlon has led the Scanlon Foundation mapping social cohesion surveys in partnership with Monash University. These surveys have been instrumental in informing government and policy makers on the attitudes, activities and movement  of immigration in Australia.

Dr Chow is a Partner and Founder at Sensato Investors, a San Francisco based investment company managing institutional investments across the Asia Pacific region. Ernie Chow began in the finance sector working at Barclays Global Investors, working his way up the ranks and by 2008 was Managing Director and  Co-Head of Active Equity before moving to start Sensato.

He is Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Chinese American International School in San Francisco, and was a Trustee of the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Read more.

Before retiring at the end of 2014, Emeritus Professor Evans had a long and varied career at Monash University and received a Centenary Medal for Services to Education. A published author, she has been an active teacher and researcher for over 20 years. Her Monash appointments include Pro-Vice Chancellor for  Planning and Quality; Director of Planning and Statistics; Director of the Monash London Centre; and Associate Chair of the Academic Board.Her board appointments include as a board member of the State Library of Victoria; the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority; the Victorian Board  of Studies; and the Victorian Council for Knowledge, Innovation, Science and Engineering.

He is currently Chief Executive of Lockheed Martin Australia. Before this, Rear Admiral Gates served in the Royal Australian Navy for 37 years culminating with the command of two guided missile frigates before retiring in 2008 as Rear Admiral. His flag officer appointments include the inaugural Commander of  the Australian Defence College, Maritime Commander Australia, Defence Attaché and Head Australian Defence Staff in Washington DC.

He is a Senior Research Associate within Agilent Technologies, a world leader in life sciences, diagnostics and applied chemical markets. Dozens of his innovations and inventions have resulted in more than 20 issued patents and patent applications as well as global technical awards and honours. He has also  received Excellence awards from the Institute of Engineers Australia, the Australian Industrial Research Group medal and the Warren Center Innovation Hero award for his contributions to technology within Australia.

She is the Executive Director HR for UK/Ireland HR at Mercer Ltd (UK), a global professional services firm. She is also Chair of Monash University’s Global Leaders Alumni Network in the United Kingdom. She has been the key driver of several award winning programs and is a sought after commentator on  inclusivity and change. Dr Martin is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a member of the Australian Psychological Society and has been recognised two years running as one of the Financial Times Top 100 LGBT executives. She has previously held Board positions with Big Brothers  Big Sisters and the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation.

Mr Redenbach is the Co-Founder and CEO of LiveTiles, a global startup company and award-winning Microsoft Partner headquartered in New York City. nLiveTiles has been adopted by some of the world’s most iconic brands and has many leading international Microsoft service providers as members of its Partner  Program. Mr Redenbach is a recipient of the Young Australian of the Year Career Achievement Award and Chief Executive Officer of the Year by the Australian Human Resources Institute. He currently serves as a Member of the East Coast chapter of the US Global Leaders Alumni Network of Monash  University.

Mr Roberts has been lauded internationally for frame-breaking and patented work in the measurement of emotion and drivers that lead to changes in consumption behaviour. Amongst his industry recognition, Mr Roberts has been awarded the Australian Marketing Institute Certified Practising Marketer of the Year.  Mr Roberts has made an important contribution to the future of the marketing profession through his publications in the Journal of Marketing Science, inventions and commercial activities and as an academic.

Paul Ronalds is CEO of Save the Children Australia. Mr Ronalds was previously First Assistant Secretary responsible for the Office of Work and Family in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet advising the Prime Minister of Australia on a broad range of social and economic policies. He has worked for  World Vision Australia as Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Director of Strategy and as Chief Operating Officer of Urban Seed providing a range of services to marginalised people in Melbourne’s inner city.

Ms Valentine Andrews is Managing Director and Global Chief Operating Officer with the largest asset manager in the world, The Real Assets Group at BlackRock, and is based in New York. Previously Ms Valentine Andrews was Co-Head and Chief Operating Officer for the Morgan Stanley Infrastructure platform based  in New York, and worked in structured finance for Macquarie Bank in both Melbourne and New York. She currently serves as a Member of the East Coast chapter of the US Global Leaders Alumni Network of Monash University.

Dr Susan White

Dr White completed her medical studies at Monash University, Prince Henry’s Hospital and Monash Medical Centre in 1989 and then was part of the first intake of Registrars into the newly confirmed specialty of Sports and Exercise Medicine. Now at Olympic Park for over 20 years Dr White has supported elite  Australian athletes in numerous international, Commonwealth and Olympic competitions and has been a member of the Australian Olympic Committee Medical Commission for a number of years. She was also Chief Medical Officer for Swimming Australia from 2007 until 2014. In 1999, Dr White joined the  Australian Sports Drug Medical Advisory Committee and became Chair in 2014. She also serves on international committees engaged in anti-doping and therapeutic use issues and sits on many tribunals to consider anti-doping violations.
