Distinguished Alumni Award 2015 - Faculty of Engineering
Ms Samantha Read is the Chief Executive Officer of the Plastics and Chemical Industries Association (PACIA).
As an engineer with more than 25 years’ experience in a wide range of industries, she is acutely aware of the challenges facing manufacturing but could not imagine living in a country that does not make things.
In January 2014, Ms Read was appointed Chief Executive Officer of PACIA, the voice of Australia’s chemistry industry. The industry is central to the economic success and social wellbeing of Australia, is the second largest manufacturing sector and provides essential building blocks for 109 of Australia’s 111 industry sectors.
As the pre-eminent national body representing Australia's $40 billion chemistry industry, whose sectors directly employ more than 60,000 people, PACIA's members comprise a broad range of companies positioned across the entire value chain, from small family-owned companies and medium-sized enterprises, to leading national and multinational enterprises.
As CEO, Ms Read provides industry leadership and advocacy to build and promote a vibrant market sector.
Ms Read’s career in manufacturing and industry spans more than 25 years. Prior to joining PACIA, she was CEO at the Biofuels Association of Australia and has previously held senior executive and Board roles in the Australian automotive and steel industries, including as a former Director on the boards of GM Holden, General Motors Australia and the automotive industry’s peak body, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.
Ms Read’s career has been diverse with her time at Holden including roles in Corporate Affairs, Government Relations, Procurement and Quality. Her career began in BHP’s Research and Steel Divisions, working in roles including manufacturing, strategic technology planning and research, across a range of locations.
Ms Read is a passionate advocate for a strong Australian manufacturing industry as vital to the long-term success of Australia’s economy, providing skilled jobs, driving investment and delivering innovation, new technology and research outcomes.
She has contributed to numerous government and industry working groups, committees and Boards over the past 13 years, focused on policy to drive growth, investment and the sustainability of Australian manufacturing.
Ms Read was a finalist in the 2014 Telstra Business Women’s Awards. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) in Materials Engineering from Monash University and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
