I’m excited to report that the Monash alumni community now has more than 290,000 members in 145 countries across the globe.
We attained this impressive figure after recent graduations in Gippsland and Malaysia. I would like to welcome all our recent graduates to the Monash alumni community and thank those who shared their photos from the day on social media.
President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ed Byrne AC, returned last week from a trip to New York, San Francisco and Hong Kong where he focused on engaging with more than 200 of Monash University’s senior alumni.
The response to Professor Byrne’s visit was very positive and there is a real desire for alumni to re-connect and give back to Monash. A number of alumni in the US and Hong Kong also expressed an interest in offering internships for Monash students.
In Hong Kong, prominent alumnus the Honourable Dr Peter Costello AC gave an address to key Monash alumni in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Monash University Law School.
This year we are moving to a new format for our Australian graduation ceremonies. Clayton campus ceremonies will now be held over a two week period in May (12 – 22 May) and a one week period in October (20 – 24 October).
This will create a wonderful sense of celebration and community. The Alumni Relations team will be on campus throughout this time meeting our newest graduates and providing information on alumni benefits and career-related services. Keep an eye out on social media for images of Clayton campus graduation fortnight from 12 May.
My team will also be working closely with current students as part of our upcoming alumni telethon which launches on 30 April. Students will be ringing alumni to talk about the exciting things happening at Monash and how they can be a part of our vision for the future.
This is Monash’s first telethon and we will also be seeking to raise support for our scholarship programs, research opportunities, and our libraries. Our students will benefit greatly from this opportunity to speak to alumni about their Monash experience.
Speaking of the Monash experience, there are many faculties and areas of the University celebrating their 50th anniversaries this year including the law and education faculties, the Australian Centre for Indigenous Studies, and the Matheson Library at Clayton campus.
Find out how you can get involved by visiting our website. This page will be kept up to date as we celebrate many more fiftieths in the coming years.
We’ve also held some wonderful events in Singapore and Melbourne in recent months that have brought alumni together and back to campus. View photos from our Singapore Career Compass event and Prato alumni function.
I hope you enjoy this month’s edition.
