Alumna named to Reserve Bank of Australia board
Monash University Fellow, Ms Carol Schwartz AM (BA 1977, LLB 1978, MBA 1988) became the first Monash alumna to serve on the board of the Reserve Bank of Australia. She commenced her appointment in February 2017 for a term of five years.
As one of Australia’s leading business identities, Carol brings a wealth of experience to the role gained from a 25 year career as an investor and company director. She is currently a Non-Executive Director of the Stockland Group, Qualitas Property Partners and the Trawalla Group.
Previously, Carol served as a Non-Executive Director of the Bank of Melbourne and was the Chair of the Industry Superannuation Property Trust. Carol got her start in business running her own dance studio and was the former General Manager of the Highpoint Shopping Centre.
A passionate advocate for diversity in business, Carol is the Founding Chair of the Women’s Leadership Institute Australia and was the first woman president of the Property Council of Australia. Schwartz told the Australian Financial Review that she hopes to bring more diversity to the Reserve Bank board.
"The more diversity you have around the Reserve Bank board table the better… so hopefully I'll bring something they don't have to the table," she said.
In addition to her business success, Carol is a prominent philanthropist. She was recognised for her charitable work when she was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia partly for her service to the community through support for health promotion and the arts.
As Chair of Our Community and Creative Partners Australia, Carol continues to support the community through her leadership. She is also a Trustee of the Besen Foundation and along with her husband, Alan (BEc 1976, LLB 1976) and their four children, established the Trawalla Foundation that invests in social enterprises in support of the arts, innovation and scholarships.
