Alumna records award honour
Alumna Ailie Smith (MBIS 2013) has been awarded the 2013 Victorian Association for Library Automation’s (VALA) Student Award.
Each year VALA presents an award to a Monash University student in recognition of outstanding achievement in postgraduate information-technology-related courses. Ms Smith received outstanding results in her Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) studies, having undertaken the archives and records management specialisation.
Studying as a part-time, distance student, she successfully juggled study and work commitments. Her achievements included a research report analysing the 2012 International Council on Archives (ICA) Congress. The report analysed sample papers from the various conference themes against the literature in order to draw out professional issues and concerns. Ms Smith used visualisation techniques to see what the titles of papers could reveal if treated as a data set.
In 2011 Ms Smith was awarded the Australian Academy of Science’s Moran Award for History of Science Research aimed at encouraging use of the Academy’s library collections by postgraduate students and other independent researchers.
Ms Smith is currently a Research Archivist at the University of Melbourne eScholarship Research Centre.
