First Global Discovery Program a success
First Global Discovery Program a success
Eight talented Monash students have spent eight days in the city that never sleeps thanks to the generosity of alumni in the United States.
The students were the successful applicants of the University’s first Global Discovery Program.
The program, an initiative of the US arm of the Global Leaders Network, offered the students the chance to network with leaders from business, government and not-for-profit organisations, providing them with new skills and connections to support their future careers.
Benjamin Campbell (Law); George Kennedy (Arts); Kate Maxfield (Medicine/Arts); Emma Moore (BusEco, Law, Arts); Neha Patil (Arts); Mari Smith (Engineering/Art Design and Architecture); Tony Tan (Science/Arts) and Christopher Tham (Medicine) visited the United Nations, New York University, Bloomberg, and the New York Stock Exchange, and met with leaders of companies including NGO, Charity Water, over the eight day visit.
They also attended functions with Monash President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AO and senior University alumni.
You can read about the students’ experiences on our blog and view pictures on Facebook. You can also watch a video about what they learned from the program and their plans for the future.
The US Global Leaders Network is the first of seven alumni groups Monash University hopes to establish in Hong Kong, Indonesia, mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore, the UK and the United States.
The groups will aim to develop in-country opportunities for alumni and current Monash students. The east coast US network is led by graduate Sue Fennessy and includes fellow alumni Patrick Loftus-Hills, Anne Valentine Andrews and Karl Redenbach.
Executive Director, External Relations, Development and Alumni, Mr Damien Farrell said the first student internship opportunity had been a wonderful success.
“The feedback we have received from our eight students has been fantastic and already the visit has yielded results with one student being offered an internship at the United Nations,” Mr Farrell said.
“We hope that this program will act as a pilot of sorts for the Global Leaders networks in our six other locations whose objectives are to offer beneficial and unique opportunities for Monash students.
“On behalf of the University, I thank the east coast-based US Global Leaders Network board for their initiative, foresight, and willingness to sponsor such an exciting program.”
This year's Global Discovery Program was made possible through the generosity of the four members of the US Global Leaders Network Board. Intern programs, sponsorships and mentoring are all ways we would like to actively engage the US-based Monash alumni to build on the success of the Global Discovery Program.
