At Monash you can learn Chinese as a foreign language from introductory to advanced, according to international standards. We offer an undergraduate program that incorporates language acquisition and cultural competence. The core units of our major have been mapped against the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, allowing students to track their progression against international benchmarks.

In Chinese students can achieve a level of B1 (Intermediate User) through an integrated curriculum. At an advanced level background students and students who incorporate in-country study in their degree may acquire the skills to achieve a level of C1 (Proficient User). At the advanced level language skills are acquired and refined through theme based teaching rather than through conventional language instruction. The Chinese language and culture program aims to equip students with critical and analytical skills in preparation for Honours and postgraduate study.
