A2 CEFR I can understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). I can catch the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements. I can read very short, simple texts. I can find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material such as advertisements, prospectuses, menus and timetables and I can understand short simple personal letters. I can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities. I can handle very short social exchanges, even though I can’t usually understand enough to keep the conversation going myself. I can use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms my family and other people, living conditions, my educational background and my present or most recent job. I can write a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple connections like ‘ and’, ‘ but’ , and ‘because’.
A2+ German Studies I can understand weather forecasts. I listen to songs, poems and rhymes. I am also accessing competency-level-based selected online listening (audio and video) materials from a designated German as a foreign language resource pool. I can understand simple headlines and advertisements. I am expanding my suite of text-types and can access different text functions. I am disseminating these articles (<500 words) with a view to producing summaries as part of the final exam. I can conduct simple dialogues and interviews. I am able to engage in more advanced role plays. These role plays will be replicated during 10-minute end of semester oral exams. I am improving my ability to describe myself, family, work, education, and everyday life. I am also starting to produce language for enhanced levels of abstract communication. I am able to write simple texts. I write shopping lists, travel plans, or short headlines and dedicated scripts (invitations, apologies, inquiries etc.). My compositions reach 300-400 words in length.
A2 German Studies I can understand basic conversations, simple discussions and simple interviews. I can also access competency-level-based selected online listening (audio and video) materials from a designated German as a foreign language resource pool. I am developing enhanced comprehension of a range of text-types and genres (job offers, resumes, TV programmes, checklists and letters). I can understand simple literary texts, poems, and rhymes. I can communicate familiar topics like family, education or work. I am starting to develop a more complex and differentiated verbal register and am starting to produce language that meets a range of functions. I will select particular (spoken) text functions for my 10 minute end of semester oral exam. I can describe myself, family, work, education, and everyday life. Linguistically I am increasingly able to leave the highly localised context of my foreign language utterances (the ‘here and now’) and articulate more abstract notions – past and future, involving memory recall and future projections. I can write short simple letters, newspaper articles, or stories. I can create interview questions or quizzes. I am now able to express more abstract notions in my writing – past and future - involving memory recall and future projections, involving texts of 300 words.
