I can read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular stances or viewpoints. I can understand contemporary literary prose. I can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible. I can take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining my views. I can present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to my field of interest. I can explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. I can write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to my interests. I can write an essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view.
B2+ German Studies I am listening to and improving my comprehension of radio and television programmes, talk shows, webcasts and video blogs. I can increasingly recognise colloquial expressions and differentiate between formal registers and idiomatic expressions. I am listening to songs and watching video clips. I am also accessing competency-level based selected online listening (audio and video) materials from a designated German as a foreign language resource pool. Listening material ranges from 5-10 minutes in length. I am developing a better understanding of different genres, including product information texts and long, and complex instructions. I can recognise and discern between different points of view. I am developing more advanced German foreign language reading skills, including excerpting, skimming and scanning. I am conducting interviews and talking on the telephone. I can describe internal states and generate formal and factual discourse as well as utterance reflecting internal states of emotion (distress, hope, anticipation disappointment, exasperation etc). I am able to sustain verbal interactions for up to 20 minutes and will have 15 minute oral exams. I am developing more advanced expository and argumentative skills for oral presentations, as part of the final exam. My fluency is improving and my utterances are of a standard where I can discuss a text’s content (article, blog, poem, prose) for 20 mins, as part of the final exam. I am able to analyse discussions systematically. I am writing summaries, formal letters, stories, or advertisements. I am producing my own written narratives (up to 500 words) and have at my disposal a choice of registers and style. I am developing mastery textual coherence and cohesion.
B2 German Studies I am exposed to longer and more complex conversations, speeches, radio and television programmes, webcast and video blogs indicative of a more broad-based spectrum of functional registers. I can understand telephone conversations, answering machines and interviews. I am also accessing competency-level based selected online listening (audio and video between 4-8 min) materials from a designated German as a foreign language resource pool. Exercises include note-taking with a few to use during final exams. I am understanding literary texts, poems, articles, advertisements and correspondence. My reading is increasingly directed towards analytical analysis of theoretical and current affairs content. Texts are 800-1200 words in length. I am able to express ideas and assumptions. I can justify opinions and give advice. My verbal register is being more fine-tuned and I am becoming enabled to respond increasingly in a register that matches the communicative function of the interaction. In preparation for oral exams I am preparing for complex role plays and seeking authentic interaction with native speakers. I am holding presentations and taking part in advanced discussions on a range of topics (current affairs, social change, literary topics). Source texts are >800 words. I am filling out complex questionnaires or forms. I can describe thoughts and feelings in correspondence. I can take notes from audio-visual source text and summarise and recast texts in my own word. My texts are traditionally 400–500 words.
