C1 CEFR I can understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly. I can understand television programmes and films without too much effort. I can understand long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating distinctions of style. I can understand specialised articles and longer technical instructions, even when they do not relate to my field. I can express myself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. I can use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes. I can formulate ideas and opinions with precision and relate my contribution skilfully to those of other speakers I can present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects integrating sub-themes, developing particular points and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion I can express myself in clear, well-structured text, expressing points of view at some length. I can write detailed expositions of complex subjects in an essay or a report, underlining what I consider to be the salient issues. I can write different kinds of texts in a style appropriate to the reader in mind.
C1+ German Studies I am understanding conversations about complex topics, interviews, oral reports, speeches and  announcements. I am able to access and process advanced spoken texts >15 minutes in length. Texts involve a wide variety of genres and form the basis of a 15 min listening exam. I am recognising different opinions and implicit statements, and the different functions of genres, styles and registers. I am able to understand colloquial language and idiomatic expressions, and am further exploring scientific and technical texts. Texts vary in length between 1000-2000 words, depending on complexity and level of abstraction. I am summarising long texts. I am able to engage in long and detailed debates, deliver speeches and generate reports. I am improving my ability to develop expository and argumentation skills during long presentations. I am developing sociolinguistic and target-culture competencies, and developing accurate adherence to socio-interactive norms (knowledge of taboos, politeness and directness norms, age and gender-specific rules) I am writing long, well-structured comments. I can precisely describe experiences and feelings in long letters. I generate texts, unassisted, of 300-500 words in one hour. I am aware of complex discursive norms, and my writing reflects these norms.
C1 German Studies I am listening to radio programmes, including non-standard language programmes. I am able to understand colloquial language in theatre plays and films. I am increasingly focusing on advanced processing skills aimed at recall and recasting of audio-visual input. I am accessing and processing complex current affairs and contemporary literary texts. I am further improving my foreign language reading abilities and metalinguistic skills, analysing differences and focusing on similarities (cognates, shared frames, scripts and concepts). These will form the basis for reading exams. I can express ideas clearly and fluently in an interview. I am leading discussions and interacting across a broad spectrum of media – telephone, Skype, face-to-face and blogs. I will have a 15 minute, unassisted, oral examination. I am leading discussions about complex topics. I am able to develop argumentation skills, and am consciously enriching my verbal repertoire in order to be able to interact across a broader functional spectrum. I am using advanced analytical, expository and argumentative skills in written context. I can summarise highly complex texts. I generate texts, unassisted, of 300-500 words in one hour. I am becoming conscious of more complex discursive norms.
