B1 I can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. I can understand the main point of many radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear. I can understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language. I can understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters I can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. I can enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events). I can connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences and events, my dreams, hopes & ambitions. I can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. I can narrate a story or relate the plot of a book or film and describe my reactions. I can write straightforward connected text on topics, which are familiar, or of personal interest.
B1.2 Proficient 2 I improve my ability to understand dialogues or monologues on topics about Japan. I also develop my ability to understand different genres, by activities such as watching videos on Japanese culture and listening to Japanese songs. I can read texts (approx. 2000 characters) on various topics about Japan, which are written for intermediate level  students. I also develop my ability to read authentic texts, like manga and websites to prepare for an oral presentation. Using vocabulary and expressions practiced in class, I develop my ability to communicate in complex situations (e.g. explaining troubles). I can also talk about broader topics about Japan with Japanese native speakers at a visitor session, to enhance my knowledge about Japanese culture.  I am able to do a presentation on one of the topics studied in class, based on research using published resources. I can write an essay (approx. 1600 characters) on a topic related to Japan, with the assistance of dictionaries and other language and content resources. By the end of this unit, I can write approx.600 kanji, including 150 new kanji.
B1.1 Proficient 1 I can understand simple conversations or monologues on personal topics which are based on language practiced in class. I also develop my ability to keep listening even when I encounter unfamiliar vocabulary and grammar. With the assistance of dictionaries, I can read texts (approx. 1500 characters) written for intermediate level of students. I also develop my skills to use online language resources effectively and to understand new loan words written in katakana. I develop my ability to use appropriate speech styles according to context, and can discuss speech styles with Japanese native speakers at a visitor session. I also expand my ability to communicate more naturally, using communication strategies (e.g. nodding, filler and asking for clarification). I can explain about various topics related to Japan if I prepare beforehand, and also ask and answer related questions about these topics. Using vocabulary and expressions practiced in class, I can write a short essay (800-1000 characters) on a topic which I have researched, under exam conditions (approx. 1 hour). I also learn approx. 150 new kanji by the end of this unit.
