Description

Enhancing Video Lectures: What Technology can Offer

Presented by Dr Chris Murray-Lecturer - Literary and Creative Writing Studies, School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics

Resources such as animation, graphics, and stock footage of locations and historical events offer new means to communicate with students. These materials can bring us nearer to distant locationscultures, and lifestyles, and help to transmit more abstract ideas. Studies of online-learning habits suggest that efficient use of such ingredients in university-level instructional videos results in better learning outcomes than the use of speech and slides alone. This workshop will discuss how a range of audio and visual materials can be integrated to enhance the effectiveness of our own video-lectures. It will cover the kinds of material available, and outline the process of creating a video lecture: taking a basic recording and accentuating its core lessons using digital tools. The event will offer an opportunity to exchange ideas about the use of such technologies, and to discuss ways that the School/Faculty might pool resources and facilitate new procedures.
