The unit introduces students to the study of human rights with a specific focus on social justice, law and criminology. Exploring a variety of case studies of (potential) human rights abuses and challenges, involving gender inequality, discrimination, social media, surveillance, Trump, immigration and torture, this unit explores contrasts between local, national and international understandings and definitions of human rights, and the available responses both within and beyond the law. The unit brings students together with experts from academia, industry and activism to challenge and expand understandings of human rights and their role in society.
