Ukrainian: Intensive Language Program

Ukrainian Language and Culture Summer School, Ukrainian Catholic University, Lviv.

Students undertaking Ukrainian Studies, whether they commence at the introductory or the intermediate level, are strongly encouraged to enrol for the Summer School offered by the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv in Western Ukraine. It is recommended that students attend the School between first and second semester, either in their second or their third year of study. In the past some students have attended the School in two consecutive years.

As well as offering intensive formal tuition and face-to-face individual language work with specialist teachers, the School immerses students in a Ukrainian-speaking environment and provides a range of opportunities to experience Ukrainian culture and everyday life.

Information about the Summer School is at

The Summer School teaches classes at several levels of competence and offers programs of different lengths. Monash students enrolling in the Summer School for Monash credit will be expected to have successfully completed the Ukrainian Studies unit for which they were enrolled in the preceding semester.

For Monash students, the successful completion a three-week program results in 6 points of Monash credit. An extra fee is payable if UCU is to notify Monash of the successful completion of the course.

The School offers daily Ukrainian language classes, as well as daily one-to-one tutoring with native speakers. It provides a rich cultural program which includes excursions and weekend trips .

In 2019, the three-week program commencing on 8 July and concluding on 26 July will be the most convenient for Monash students, as it avoids clashes with both the Semester 1 examination period and Semester 2 classes.

Application process:
  • Apply directly to UCU in March.  Be sure to speak to the coordinator of Ukrainian Studies about your plans as they can provide advice about what you can study.
  • When you receive an offer from UCU contact  They will walk you through the process about receiving Monash approval and credit towards your studies.
  • Don't book flights or obtain visas until Monash has approved your application, however be sure to leave enough time to obtain a visa
