Grade conversions for exchange

LLCL students

Students studying language majors or minors taught out of the School of Languages, Literature, Cultures and Linguistics (LLCL) prior to Semester 2 2018, will receive a converted mark and standard final grade (e.g. D) for the units undertaken on an Exchange program to a partner institution. From Semester 2 2018, students studying language major or minors will not receive a grade for exchange units studied at a partner institution.

LLCL Honours students

Students studying abroad as part of their Honours study in any discipline taught by LLCL will also receive a mark and standard final honours grade for the units they undertake.

These students will initially be enrolled into ordinary exchange units (AEH-coded units). Once they confirm their enrolment at their host university, the Arts Global Programs Coordinator will enrol the student in the relevant number of AEX-coded units. These units do not have credit points attached (ie. student will not achieve double the credit points for being enrolled in language units abroad) but will house the mark and grade the student will receive. The student’s converted grade will be calculated into their WAM and GPA.

How it works

On return to Monash, honours students or LLCL students enrolled in AEX codes prior to Semester 2 2018, students provide their LLCL study abroad adviser/academic with their work completed overseas. Monash Abroad and Arts Global Programs will provide the academic with the student’s host transcript. This work and transcript is reviewed by the academic and a converted grade is awarded:

  • Academics will use the below Conversion Tables to identify a mark and grade reference point for the mark you received overseas
  • Academics will then review supporting documentation supplied by the student to determine the mark and grade that you will receive for your language study with a partner institution*
    • Upon your return to Monash, you are required to provide Monash staff with the following documentation:
      • Assessed coursework completed at the host university
      • Unit guides/syllabi of units completed at the host university
      • Written comments by host university academics
      • Median/mean grade position within the class
      • Other assessment and study materials as directed by the undergraduate coordinator for the relevant language
    • If you are unable to submit the above items you will be required to complete assessment tasks as determined by academic staff, upon your return to Monash, which may include the following activities:
      • 10 minute oral exam in language of study for each unit
      • 500 word essay in language of study for each unit
    • Where assessment in a unit taught by a partner institution is through formal examination alone, students will complete oral and essay assessment tasks, or other tasks as determined by academic staff, on their return to Monash.
  • Students who are undertaking honours study with a host institution must discuss their assessment requirements with discipline and School honours coordinators prior to departure, and should remain in contact with their honours supervisor while they are studying with the host institution.

*Instructions on how to submit supporting documentation and how the grades will appear on your transcript will come shortly.

Conversion Tables

Upon receipt of your results from the partner university, academics will use the following regional conversion tables to convert the grade to an approximate Monash mark and grade as an initial point of reference for review of assessment and determination of grade:
