Welcome to the School of Media, Film and Journalism. We are a School of 43 academic staff who teach and research across media, journalism, and film and screen studies. Our staff are constantly engaged in the theoretical, historical, social and industrial contexts of media and culture. This includes pressing contemporary issues ranging from online misinformation to #MeToo; and from changes in film and television consumption to climate change communication.
We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses that prepare students for future jobs in the media professions, and for rapidly changing contexts of doing media work in the twenty-first century, with a renewed emphasis upon digital media and its implications
The new Bachelor of Media Communication at our Caulfield campus offers students an unparalleled mix of practice-based learning, theory and portfolio development.
MFJ offers four Masters courses:
- Master of Communication and Media Studies
- Master of Cultural and Creative Industries
- Master of Journalism
The school features the Monash Media Lab, students have access to contemporary news studios and related digital media production facilities that ensure they are at the forefront of current news production methods and training. In addition, our journalism and media communication students run the independent news organization, MOJO News; a number of MOJO alumni have subsequently won Ossie and Walkley journalism awards and worked with major media organizations across Australia. Students also produce The Struggle, a satirical take on contemporary news.
Our research explores how changes in communication impact on the ways we live, work, interact and connect; the history and meaning of niche and popular media forms; and how media forms and their distribution are transforming content and uses in a constantly changing digital media landscape.
The school is home to a series of research programs focused on:
- Culture, Media, Economy
- Media, Society & the Politics of Change
- Screen Histories and Cultures
- Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub
- Environment & Media
We also have a vibrant community of doctoral students completing their PhD studies within the Film, Media, Communication and Journalism program.
Please take a good look around the School’s website about our courses, and what our lecturers, researchers and students are up to. You can also find testimonials from our students, including examples of their work.
