International Research Cluster

Mobile Media Sport Research Cluster

Over a four-year period, the Fellowship will identify and connect 25 researchers who, in different ways, investigate and explain the complex interaction between sport, mobile media, telecommunications, and convergent media environments. The objective is to generate and foster much-needed ‘critical mass’ in this important area of innovation and study. This international Research Cluster encompasses a range of perspectives and experiences, including postgraduate and early career researchers, as well as mid-career and senior scholars. These figures offer a range of disciplinary perspectives, including media studies, cultural studies, communications, policy studies, and sociology.

Raymond Boyle is Professor of Communication and Deputy Director of the Centre for Cultural Policy Research at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Tom Evens is Senior Researcher at the Research Group for Media & ICT and lectures in ICT markets and economics at Ghent University in Belgium. He has published on the media business in international journals such as New Media & Society, Telematics & Informatics, and Media, Culture & Society. Together with Petros Iosifidis and Paul Smith, he is the author of The Political Economy of Television Sports Rights (Palgrave Macmillan). Gerard Goggin is Professor of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney. His research focusses on the social, cultural, and political aspects of digital technologies. A pioneer in the study of mobile communication and media studies, his books include Global Mobile Media (Routledge), Cell Phone Culture (Routledge), and New Technologies and the Media (Palgrave Macmillan). Larissa Hjorth is an artist, digital ethnographer, Professor and Deputy Dean in Research & Innovation in the School of Media & Communication at RMIT University . Andy Miah is Professor of Ethics and Emerging Technologies and Director of the Creative Futures Institute at the University of the West of Scotland. David Rowe is Professor of Cultural Research in the Institute for Culture and Society at the University of Western Sydney in Australia. Jimmy Sanderson is Vice-Chair of the International Association for Communication and Sport, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Clemson University in South Carolina in the US. Lawrence Wenner is the Von der Ahe Professor of Communication and Ethics in the College of Communication and Fine Arts and the School of Film and Television at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
