Master of Communications and Media Studies student thrives in the Arts Graduate Leadership Program
Arts Graduate Leadership Program participant Vijay Paul has thrived as a mentor during his time at Monash and reaped the rewards.
The Arts Graduate Leadership Program provides high-achieving graduate coursework students the opportunity to access an exclusive series of career enhancing professional development workshops throughout the year, plus the opportunity to apply their leadership skills through peer mentoring.
Vijay, a Master of Communications and Media Studies student, always held an interest in mentoring.
Having gone through the process of being a new student himself, Vijay knew how crucial it can be to have a helping hand on campus.
So, when he first found out about the program, Vijay jumped at the opportunity to assist and guide new students.
“Many students can feel out of place in their first semester, particularly international students. The program is about building up people’s confidence and making them realise that Monash is a family and everyone is welcome,” Vijay said.
For Vijay, the program has been an opportunity to give back to the university and build connections with students.
And importantly, it’s rewarding to know he’s made someone’s life on campus that little bit easier.
“I believe that when you make a positive impact on a person’s life, it stays with you,” Vijay said.
“I’m still in touch with many of my mentees.”
Vijay’s time in the Arts Graduate Leadership Program, being acquainted with a network of students and Faculty of Arts staff, has opened a number of doors for him.
His participation in the leadership program unlocked the opportunity for him to be a postgraduate representative in the Arts Graduate Committee, and later, to work as an Events Officer in the Faculty of Arts.
“A leadership opportunity in Arts gives you a precursor to the job market and working in multicultural industries,” Vijay said.
Students from any of the Arts coursework Master’s degrees are able to apply for the Graduate Leadership Program. Upon completion of the program, students are formally recognized at the Faculty’s Postgraduate Dinner where they are awarded a certificate by the Dean of Arts. Full details on what students will experience, program eligibility and other key information is available on the Arts Graduate Leadership Program page.
