Partnering to work towards realising women’s safe and fair migration across ASEAN

Monash Migration and Inclusion Centre partners with UN Women and the ILO to support safe and fair labour migration for all women in the ASEAN region.

Monash Migration and Inclusion Centre, along with Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre and Monash Centre for Gender, Peace and Security, is pleased to announce a new project in partnership with UN Women and the ILO, working together on a scoping and baseline study for Safe and Fair: Realising women migrant workers' rights and opportunities in the ASEAN region. The main objective of this programme “is to achieve safe and fair labour migration for all women in the ASEAN region by addressing women migrant workers' vulnerabilities, enhancing their access to essential services and strengthening rights-based and gender-responsive approaches to violence against women and migration governance”.

The Safe and Fair programme sits under the EU/UN Spotlight Initiative: a global, multi-year initiative focused on eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls (VAWG)

The project team, led by Associate Professor Marie Segrave, includes Rebecca Powell, Associate Professor Rebecca Wickes, Dr Bodean Hedwards, Professor Jacqui True, and Professor Jude McCulloch.

The team is working across 8 ASEAN countries to undertake scoping and baseline research, to lay the ground for the implementation of Safe and Fair until 2022. Women migrant workers, as the primary stakeholder and focus of Safe and Fair, are participants in the research across every stage
