Making Clayton Home (2018/2019 edition)

How do we make a new neighbourhood our home? How do our lives intersect across cultures and space and what new stories are generated in the process? “My Place My Story – Making Clayton Home” is a series of workshops led by Monash University’s Dr. Francesco Ricatti and Hailan Paulsen, where participants from the Italian and Chinese communities shared their own stories about coming to Australia and making Clayton their home. The workshops focused on participants’ lived experience of settlement in the area, how the area has changed over the years, and the importance of food in the process of settlement, orientation, emplacement and socialization.

Each workshop was recorded and a DVD with the recorded workshops will be given to participants.

A final gathering brought both communities together to celebrate and enjoy a meal incorporating each other’s traditional foods.

This program was a partnership between Monash University Faculty of Arts (School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics) and Monash Public Library Service.
