Monash Animated Notation Ensemble (MANE)
The Monash Animated Notation Ensemble (MANE) is an ensemble of staff, postgraduate students and alumni that resides at Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance at Monash University. It focuses exclusively on music that is scored using animated notation. Animated notation can be defined as “a predominately graphic music notation that engages dynamic characteristics on screen media” (Hope, 2019). Established in 2019, the ensemble is directed by Professor Cat Hope. It has a flexible instrumentation. In 2020 the ensemble commissioned their first new work, awarded to Victorian composer Jaslyn Robertson. In 2021 Amanda Cole won the commission. In 2022, the ensemble performed a series of new works in Hamburg, Germany as part of a residency in partnership with the Hamburg Hochschule for Music and Theatre (HfMT), the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) and the European Research Council's DigiScore project.
