MLIVE $15,000 David Li Sound Gallery Commission

The Monash Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) is calling for expressions of interest from composers and sound designers to create an improvised and experimental musical work using the Meyer Sound Constellation Acoustic System in the David Li Sound Gallery, The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts.

EOI closes 1 March

Created to support the cultivation of new and experimental Australian music using new technologies, the $15,000 MLIVE David Li Sound Gallery Commission enables artists to work with an active acoustic system designed to optimise the acoustics of a space for a range of performances. Fitted with microphones, loudspeakers, processing technology and calibration and tuning services, 'The possibility of using the spatiality of the system enables one to add a new dimension to a musical composition that has been talked about for perhaps a half a century,' explains MAPA's Executive Director Paul Grabowsky.

The new work developed as a result of the commission will be presented as part of MLIVE's inaugural jazz and improvised music festival in September. Taking place at The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts, the 10-day event celebrates improvisation, innovation and experimentation in music.

Previous recipients include Melbourne-based electronic duo OK EG who presented Wavelength II during MLIVE's Progress Festival in 2019.
