Celebrating the achievements of our students: Monash Arts Awards

This May, Monash Arts was thrilled to be able to host our annual Arts Awards in person for the first time since 2019. A celebratory event at which the hard work and dedication of our highest achieving undergraduate and postgraduate students is recognised, this year’s celebrations were held at the Alexander Theatre, with just over 200 guests in attendance. Our recipients accepted their awards in front of friends, family, peers, academics and Monash Arts donors.

The night commenced with congratulatory speeches from Deputy Dean (Education), Associate Professor Benjamin McQueen and Interim Dean of Arts, Professor Rita Wilson. “It has been an extraordinary couple of years and the work ethic shown by these Arts Awards winners is nothing short of exceptional,” noted Professor Wilson. “As you move into your next stage of studies, your voice, perspectives and passion will help shape both our collective future and your personal choices. Above all else, I encourage you to tackle the coming years with an open heart, a clear mind, and full confidence in your abilities.”

The audience were also treated to an inspiring speech from alumni guest speaker, Tess Guthrie. Guthrie graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science, majoring in Philosophy and Pure Mathematics, and has since founded data analytics company, WhyHive. Reflecting on their own journey, they expressed the importance of pursuing unique ideas, telling the audience, “If you notice the voices in your head, the ones telling you you’re not good enough…is that your voice or the voice of someone else? In my case, it was the voice of the patriarchy.”

After two years of lockdowns and remote learning, students relished the chance to receive their awards on stage from Professor Wilson and donors while their biggest supporters watched on proudly. After the event, students also had the opportunity to catch up with peers and academics over drinks and canapes.

Congratulations to our award recipients, we are proud of your achievements and proud to have you as members of our Monash Arts community.
