About the Centre

The Monash Centre for Theatre and Performance is one of the most comprehensive theatre and performance program offered by an Australian university, enjoying a reputation as one of the most outstanding courses of its kind in the country.

We offer two pathways to study theatre and performance at undergraduate level:

  • Theatre Major or Minor
  • Music Theatre Minor

Students devise new work in the Drama Theatre

Whether taking a major or minor with us, all CTP students enter first year by taking our first year ‘Gateway Units’ Performance in Context 1 and Performance in Context 2. Students can also take 1st year electives in Acting, run by award-winning professional actors.

In their second year, students develop skills in acting, technical stage craft and directing and learn about the theory of theatre and performance. All of these units are taught by staff and professional artists in residence who bring unrivalled expertise to their teaching. In addition, students can take units in script writing, in myth in drama, and in adaptation.

In the third year, students learn about creating their own company, career prospects in the arts, and work with professional directors on several productions. In addition, students can take electives on Shakespeare, directing and philosophies of performance.

Students also have the opportunity to take up the amazing range of professional internships that our industry contacts have developed.

Music Theatre Minor:

Our Music Theatre Minor is unique in Australia. Generously sponsored by Dr Jeanne Pratt, this Minor has the vision of fostering new Australian Music Theatre and developing the next generation of music theatre artists.

In the Music Theatre Minor, students learn intensive skills in singing, dancing and acting, as well as the history of the Musical and how to write book, lyric and music.

Students work with our professional artists in residence to create their own cabaret, then in their second semester, join with professional actors to perform a new musical, staged to professional standards, in the state of the art Alexander Theatre.

Our mission:

CTP is not a drama school, but it is a creative hub where we introduce our students to all aspects of theatre and performance and nurture people who can use their talents in all aspects of life.
