Managing ethical and sustainable Australian businesses in a global market

4 – 11 February 2024

BEX3726/BEX5726 Managing ethical and sustainable Australian businesses in a global market

Ethical and Sustainable Business in a Global Market requires students to examine a broad range of external and internal issues that regional businesses face in meeting fast changing global consumer needs and trends, as well as the requirement to achieve a net zero emissions target by 2050. There appears to be an inherent dissonance in certain industries, including agriculture, fashion, tourism and hospitality, when it comes to the dichotomy of being both profitable and sustainable. While many organisations profess concern for environmental and ethical issues, some continue to indulge in business processes and procedures that are antithetical to ecological and ethical best practices, and heavily focused on profit. Byron Bay is a region well-known for its community commitment to sustainability, and its attraction of forward-thinking sustainability associations, groups, not-for-profits, and organisations. It is the perfect location to gain insight into how organisations in a range of industries address sustainability. This unit entails students analysing the impact on the strategy and operations of organisations that wish to produce ethical and sustainable products and services while remaining profitable. In undertaking this evaluation, students will also focus on developing cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity, along with effective teamwork.
