The massive explosion in available data can be a gold mine for business and a critical tool for policymakers. But finding those with the right skills to glean, sift and analyse can be a challenge.
This Masterclass, conducted by Dr Patricia Menéndez from Monash Business School’s Department of Econometrics and Statistics will delve into this issue, while drawing on her extensive academic and industry experience.
A researcher and lecturer, Dr Menéndez has diverse experience using data visualisation and statistical methods to inform policy and decision-making in the areas of crime research and environmental sciences.
She has worked for the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, as well as the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), based in Townsville, where she used statistical methods to study different processes related to the Great Barrier Reef’s coral.
'Evidence-based policies and decision making are becoming crucial and highly dependent on data collection and data analyses," she says.
"Well-trained statisticians, data scientists, and business analytics professionals are an imperative necessity. However, are quantitative skills the only expertise that these professionals need to perform their jobs?"
