Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin have been promoted as ‘safe havens’ for investors, separate from fiat-based financial markets. But at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin moved in sync with financial markets.
In this seminar, Dr John Vaz will discuss the evolution of cryptocurrency following the COVID-19 pandemic.
In May, Bitcoin changed its algorithm to make it more scarce – how has this impacted the price? Dr Vaz will also take a look at alternative cryptocurrencies such as Facebook's proposed cryptocurrency, Libra. He will consider the future of cryptocurrency in an uncertain world.
Dr Vaz will look at how the market has changed and what the fallout might be particularly with global shifts in asset classes – are cryptocurrencies becoming more acceptable as an alternative to fiat currencies?
