Accounting practices and systems are broader than just financial numbers. They can also play an important role in helping business firms understand, develop and implement pragmatic solutions.

This Masterclass, conducted by Dr Paul Thambar from Monash Business School's Department of Accounting, explores this issue through insights gained from his research into Australia's cotton industry.

Water supply is just one existential challenge to cotton growing in Australia; pests are another. Drawing on his longitudinal research work, Dr Thambar will evaluate the use of hybrid accounting practices developed and used to engage with 800 cotton-growing firms and their ecosystem partners.

These insights can be applied to a range of big challenges facing other industry sectors.

Dr Thambar has published in peer-reviewed publications including Accounting Organisations and Society and has been instrumental in securing external research income, including one of the largest grants received by the Department of Accounting. He teaches management accounting in the Master of Accounting and Master of Professional Accounting programs and has previously taught in The Monash MBA program.

Paul is a Fellow member (FCMA) of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, UK and holds the CGMA designation.
