Seminar: Why and How Should We Teach Business and Human Rights at Business Schools?

The Labour, Equality and Human Rights (LEAH) Research Group is pleased to announce a lunchtime seminar with Dr Dorothée Baumann-Pauly. Dr Baumann-Pauly is Director of Research at NYU Stern Centre for Business and Human Rights. NYU Stern’s BHR Centre, established in 2013, is the first human rights center to be established at a business school.
Globally operating businesses routinely face human rights issues. However, very few business schools offer programs or even individual classes examining how businesses should address these concerns most effectively.
What should managers of an apparel or sportswear brand do to remedy unsafe working conditions? How can tech companies address the privacy concerns of their users and ensure freedom of expression when they offer their services in closed societies? How can extractive companies ensure the safety of their assets, employees, and the communities when they operate in conflict zones?
These challenges pose serious reputational and operational risks for corporations. Business schools therefore need to ask themselves whether their graduates are being prepared to manage these and other human rights matters.
Dr Baumann-Pauly will discuss why and how business schools should be teaching human rights, and the approach taken at NYU Stern. She will also discuss the difference between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Business and Human Rights, and why it matters.
Dorothée Baumann-Pauly has been Director of Research at the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights since 2013. She oversees the Centre’s research activities, including development of academic publications, case studies and teaching resources.
She has published widely on topics at the intersection of business ethics, corporate responsibility, private governance mechanisms and human rights and serves on the editorial board of the Business and Human Rights Journal. She is the author of Managing Corporate Legitimacy (Greenleaf, 2013) and the co-editor of Business and Human Rights - From Principles to Practice (Routledge 2016), the first textbook on business and human rights.
Dorothée received a PhD in economics from the University of Zurich (Switzerland), an MA in Political Science from Rutgers University (USA) and an MA in Public Policy and Management from the University of Constance (Germany). She teaches business and human rights related subjects at HEC Lausanne, NYU Stern and other academic institutions in the US and Europe.
