What would you have done if, 50 years ago, you could see the first two digital revolutions in communication and computation coming? In 1965 Gordon Moore famously predicted exponential growth on the performance and capability of digital technology, what has come to be known as Moore's law. So the evidence was there, if you know where to look. While the internet and computers have been transformative in many ways, the first two digital revolutions have also brought digital divides in society, digital echo chambers, and gig jobs that have eroded what we consider to be fair work.

Today, there is early evidence of a third digital revolution in fabrication. The growth in digital fabrication performance and capability parallels Moore's law, pointing to exponential growth in the ability for anyone to be able to make (almost) anything. The combination of communities being more self-sufficient and individuals being personal generative will fundamentally change markets and the very nature of work. Joel will draw from his new co-authored book, Designing Reality, to show us where to look to best shape the technology now, before it shapes us in ways that we we'll regret.

Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld is Professor, Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University, USA, where he leads research on agile institutions and teaches strategy and operations. He is editor of the Negotiation Journal based in the Program on Negotiation at the Harvard Law School. He is an award-winning author who has published 12 books.

He has helped to lead large-scale change initiatives in Australia, Bermuda, Canada, England, Iceland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Panama, and the USA. He has served as President of the Labor and Employment Relations Association, USA and Visiting Professor, Sydney University.

John B Prescott AC has wide experience in major companies in resources, manufacturing and transport, including as a CEO of BHP; Chair of the Australian Submarine Corporation; of Australia's major rail freight company, Aurizon; and advisor to Governments on defence, transport, manufacturing and safety. He was a Member of Australia's Remuneration Tribunal for 6 years. He has a record of many successes in HR, IR, safety, health, the environment, innovative strategy development of major projects and business turnarounds. He has received numerous awards, including a Companion in the Order of Australia, the Australian Centenary Medal and an honorary doctorate, from Monash University.
