Professor Edward Buckingham

Edward Buckingham is Professor of Management and Director of Engagement at Monash Business School.  A keen proponent of Industry engagement, as a means to enhance the Business School’s value proposition, he facilitates joint initiatives between the business school and its stakeholders. Teaching Business Models & Strategy on both the MBA and Global Executive MBA programs at Monash are amongst his favourite activities.

Since arriving at Monash in 2015 Edward designed and directed the Victoria Indonesia Leadership Program for financial services executives and regulators; taught on multiple programs for the Australia Indonesia Centre;  directed an international business module (Malaysia and Singapore) for the Monash EMBA program; taught strategic thinking courses for Monash Malaysia;  ran business model design workshops for the faculty of science;  acted as director of the Australian Centre for Financial Studies; co-authored a report on alternative finance; led focus groups, presented masterclasses and co-authored an article on the future of work in the resources sector for the AusIMM.  He is secretary of the Monash Business School Business Advisory Board and sits on the Monash Infrastructure board.  Edward is passionate about industry engagement and has implemented the Monash Business School Masterclass campaign and Leaders Panels series to stimulate exchanges between industry and thought leaders.

He graduated with a BSc in Materials Science and a BA (Hons) in Indonesian Literature from Monash University and was Monash University’s first undergraduate exchange student to Indonesia. Edward continued with post graduate studies in China at the Johns Hopkins Nanjing Centre. He also holds an MBA from INSEAD and his PhD, from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, focused on organisational boundaries and business strategy in Indonesia.

His professional career includes business and academic roles. He began his career with the Boston Consulting Group in Shanghai advising MNCs and SOEs and, after his MBA, managed a €50million French manufacturing business, now part of Clariant prior to joining Schlumberger, the International oil and gas services company. He lectured at Nottingham University's Business School in Ningbo, China before joining Monash. He has been Director of INSEAD's Executive MBA programs (France, Singapore the UAE and Beijing) and consulted in the UK, France, Gabon, Pakistan, Russia, India and China. He has taught in French, Indonesian and Mandarin as well as English.
