- Infrastructure Engineer, City of Stonnington
- "The Monash MBA has opened my mind and launched my international career"
I established my career as a civil engineer back in my home country of Colombia. I chose the Monash MBA for two reasons. First, I wanted to shift my career from a narrow focus on civil engineering to more strategic projects. And second, I wanted to shift my career geographically, to gain international experience.
Soon after arriving at Monash, I joined Engineers Australia and attended as many industry events as possible. I began to understand the local culture and engage in professional conversations, relying heavily on the lessons learned in my MBA. In particular, studying finance in the Monash MBA allowed me to see that the cost structures and financial models I had worked with in Colombia, were in fact, the same around the world. By building a new network and gaining confidence in the relevance of my knowledge, I had what I needed to find work opportunities in Australia.
At the start of the second year of the MBA, I landed a role as an Infrastructure Engineer at Stonnington Council. I’m getting the experience I wanted, gaining a strategic understanding of public sector budgets and planning. It fits neatly around my MBA studies while preparing me for the next steps in my career, whether that’s in Australia, back home in Colombia, or most anywhere else I might choose to live.
Working at the Council has given me invaluable local experience, demystified the public sector, and allowed me to implement my MBA learnings. While Civil Engineering is a valuable discipline, choosing the Monash MBA has opened my mind and launched my international career.
