CDES co-hosts the 2017 Summer School in Development Economics
From 18 to 22 June 2017, Monash Business School’s Centre for Development Economics and Sustainability (CDES), together with the Italian Society of Economic Development (IDEAs) and the Universities of Salerno, Verona and Trento, hosted the Summer School in Development Economics in Prato, Italy.
The Summer School provides PhD students, post-docs and junior faculty members with the opportunity to obtain a detailed overview of the main methods employed in development economics research, and to discuss their own projects with leading researchers in a relaxed and open atmosphere.
As in previous years, the CDES sponsored two of its members, PhD candidates Abebe Hailemariam and Ashani Amarasinghe, to attend the Summer School. Both found the week-long event rewarding and thought-provoking, enjoying the chance to gain insight into the ideas and theories motivating the research of senior academics, and to develop friendships with PhD students with similar research interests from around the world.
Abebe and Ashani equally appreciated the feedback they received in respect of their own research, with Ashani noting that the “many encouraging comments and suggestions … will no doubt shape the future of my paper” and Abebe concurring that the Summer School “provides a perfect platform for PhD students to gain experience on how to carry out cutting-edge research on current issues in development economics. Highly recommended.”
