Energy finance and energy security

Professor Paresh Narayan

Researcher: Professor Parash Narayan

Professor Narayan has generated a new field of research in energy finance. Since 2015 he has been guest-editing a special annual edition, focused on this field, of the frontier journal Energy Economics. He also hosts an annual Energy Finance conference, which will be brought under the banner of the Energy Research Group from 2023.

Energy finance can best be described as energy market modelling; that has practical relevance to market pricing and performance; and developing trading strategies and models for different investor portfolios.  A key focus for Prof Narayan currently is evaluating how the COVID-19 pandemic is influencing trading behaviour in energy markets.

With a foundation of research now laid down, Prof Narayan is now focusing on energy insecurity in Pacific Island countries, where climate change is a major concern and driver affecting access to and the cost of energy.

Now under discussion is a collaboration between the ADBI (Asian Development Bank Institute), who have a strong interest in this area, and the Monash Business School. A top aim is to create a joint ADBI/ERG Insecurity Index.

Prof Narayan is listed on the Highly Cited Research List, published by Clarivate Analytics, and is one of only 100 researchers from global business schools, and among only three in Australia, who are listed.

He was recently awarded a two-year DFAT research grant to evaluate, with local partners in Fiji, the risk of climate change to SMEs in Fiji.
