Hi everyone, my name is Damien Gunatillake, and I’m currently in my third year studying the Bachelor of Business (Accounting), with another major in Management.
This is currently my final semester, so I’ve got mixed emotions about finishing up. On one hand, I am sad because I will miss seeing my friends on a regular basis as well as the atmosphere and university life at Monash. On the other hand, I am looking forward to putting the skills and things that I’ve learnt into the real world within the accounting industry.
Transferring from a BBA to a BBus
Unfortunately, I didn’t get the required ATAR for my first preference being the Bachelor of Business (Accounting). At first, I was quite shattered, but I learnt that I may be able to transfer to my desired course after successfully meeting some required criteria.
So I actually commenced my studies at Monash studying the Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Accounting, and then transferred to the Bachelor of Business (Accounting). Whilst completing VCE Accounting, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in that field and I was therefore lucky to know exactly what I wanted to study at university.
Behind the scenes at Open Day
Just over a week ago, Monash Open Day was held. I was a Student Leader for the Monash Business School activities at the Caulfield campus. That meant I got to see the event from behind the scenes and that I spent some of my free time helping in the planning and organising for the day. I loved every bit of it!
Looking back to when I was in Year 12, there were so many different courses that contained a major in accounting. I went to Monash Open Day to clarify why there were so many variations and learnt about how each course was different from another.
However, I wish I took the opportunity to ask more questions about the challenges that current students faced, because life at uni is completely different to school. It was therefore great to be able to speak to a lot of the visitors about some of my challenges and experiences at Monash.
Being an Ambassador
I wanted to become an Ambassador because I love spending my free time helping and meeting new people.
I was part of the Monash Business School Ambassador Program, where we received a large number of opportunities to develop different skills (e.g. teamwork and communication) at different events.
Some of my favourite events were:
- Orientation Day - for new Monash students commencing their studies
- Commerce Scholars Day - where high school students experience university and have the opportunity to speak to staff and students
- Careers Practitioners Day - where I was able to speak to lots of school careers counsellors.
Some final advice
I’m guessing you’ve heard lots of things such as “Year 12 is not the end of the world” or something similar, but it really is true as I have witnessed. So therefore, my bit of advice to future students is to follow your passion and never give up working towards your dream goal because there are always different pathways and opportunities available.
