Professor David Gilbert
David Gilbert is Professor and Director of Entrepreneurship at Monash Business School. He holds a Bachelor of Business with 1st Class Honours and a PhD on ‘Firm Innovativeness in Japanese SMEs’. Prior to his appointment at Monash Business School, David founded and was Director of the Fastrack Innovation Program at RMIT University. Fastrack is a world-class capability accelerator and innovation commercialisation program, that brought together exceptional young talent with highly engaged industry subject matter experts to solve complex, sector-wide problems.
David’s research on entrepreneurial capability, innovation and commercialisation, technology and digital transformation as well as business incubation has been published in top-tier international journals. He is also the co-author of Reinventing Innovation: Designing the Dual Organization’ (Palgrave & Macmillan – New York). He is a dedicated and demanding teacher and enjoys supervising PhD students in various areas relating to entrepreneurship and innovation. He has successfully guided 11 doctoral students to completion.
Before joining academia, David enjoyed a diverse and distinguished career in international business holding positions at the highest levels including CEO, President and Partner in both corporate and private enterprises in various countries including Japan, USA, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia as well as Hong Kong. He has extensive experience in start-ups, having founded or invested in over a dozen businesses. He is highly engaged with the start-up community in Melbourne and beyond and believes strongly in the power and efficacy of entrepreneurial mindsets, in delivering outcomes that matter.
