This series of training activities is designed to educate you about the technologies provided by the Monash technology research platforms, including those that you will need to use directly within your research project and those that you will benefit from learning more about. These activities will enhance your specialised technical skills and critical thinking abilities as well as contributing to your knowledge of biomedical science.
Teaching is a significant academic undertaking and component of any research intensive academic career. This module will cover key issues in teaching and learning relevant to sessional teaching to prepare you as a new teaching associate and develop your teaching experience. This training activity is intended to develop a broad range of skills that include: critical thinking; communication skills; professional skills such as leadership, group management and time management; understanding of the subject area; and technical expertise.
This activity will provide a structured approach by which students will apply project management skills and principles to their current work environment in the biomedical sciences, enabling them to develop generic, transferrable project management skills and to understand how these skills are applied/tailored to managing a research project. The skills developed in this module will assist students in careers in research as well as other professions.
Basic scientific research plays a key role in research discoveries, which can be translated into products, such as drugs or applications that improve human and veterinary health. This is a long-term process and therefore needs clear planning from the start with a clear definition of what the end product will look like. This module will introduce you to the initial stages of the planning process, including what needs to be considered when implementing such a project.
Through a series of interactive and collaborative blended activities students will develop the knowledge and skills for scholarly communication in the biomedical sciences led by the library faculty team. They will understand their information environment and how to stay on trend so they can effectively position themselves for success.
A critical aspect of productive research is the ability to read and understand published research papers. Journal clubs aim to broaden your knowledge of a field, familiarise you with many types of scientific questions and methodological approaches and allow you to hone your skills in data interpretation and criticism.
Writing and communication are essential aspects of the graduate research student training process. Workshops and online resources are provided to support students in the written and oral communication of their research These resources aim to improve communication skills to enhance students' careers in research, academia and other related professions.
