Molecular Systems Virology

Welcome to the Mathias Lab

Infection follows a dynamic arm wrestle between host defence and viral pathogenesis, and we investigate the fascinating molecular cascade installed by Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) to produce infectious virions.

We're part of the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, a member of the Infection & Immunity Program and of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Department of Microbiology.

Our research

HCMV egress is an essential life cycle stage that governs virion assembly and release, and is underpinned by elaborate cellular mechanisms that remain largely undefined.

Research in our laboratory uses a multidisciplinary approach integrating virology, molecular biology, microscopy, proteomics, and bioinformatics to define virion maturation, and develop viral egress as a novel axis for antiviral intervention.
